The Great Escape
Transformation is one of my absolute favorite things to discuss. I think I may have mentioned this before but when I was little I was obsessed with butterflies. I would read and study the metamorphosis process for hours. The process was so alien like and really sparked my interest. I had no idea that that interest would help me in my spiritual teachings.
Spiritual transformation is very much like the butterfly’s metamorphosis. I will walk you through the stages just to give you more clarity as we move through gaining a deeper understanding of what you may have experienced or maybe you are experiencing at the moment.
The first stage in the journey of the butterfly is the egg. In this stage the female butterfly carefully selects the plant to lay the eggs on. It must be the proper plant so that when the larvae breaks through the shell, it can feast on the leaf that it was adhered to. While inside of the egg the embryo grows, and grows until the larvae runs out of space inside of the egg. It has no choice but to hatch and begin a new journey in its new form.
Much like the first stage of the Dark Night of the Soul, the Desire for More, this stage kicks off the start of a long hard journey.
The strategically placed egg symbolizes God placing you in the perfect position to ensure the survival of your little self. The eggshell is symbolic of you being divinely protected. While in the shell the embryo is supernaturally empowered by God with instinct, intuition, and the wisdom of your ancestors (DNA). The embryo turns into the caterpillar, or our little self. God provides the body a safe place to grow until you have enough of the skills and wisdom, to make the great escape out of the egg.
You cannot stop the unrest in your soul, you long for something other than what you have always known or experienced. You intuitively know that it is time to expand, grow, and escape your current environment. Maybe you’ve conquered the job, the degree(s), the marriage, the kids, the money, and you are comfortable and safe, yet you still desire more. The unrest in your soul is the energy that you will use to break free of the current restraints, to push out into the big wide world to truly live.
The things that once made you feel safe, secure, happy, and fed, now feel like a cage that you can no longer stay in. You feel as if you are trapped and must break free. Just like the larvae inside of the egg your little self has outgrown your circumstances, it is now time to crack the egg. You are being called to break open what is constraining you, so that you may begin to live on your own trusting God’s plan. You must learn to trust what you cannot see, and without the protection of the eggshell. You begin the great escape and adventure into the unknown.
As you break free of your shell be patient with yourself. It takes so much strength and power to free yourself from what you have always known to be safe. This is a very frightening and unsure part of the process. It is what God uses to increase our faith, trust, and reliance on Him. This is where you must begin to take notice of God working in your life and surrender to His plan. Releasing yourself from the egg, you enter into the next stage of transformation which is Spiritual Death. I will save that juicy goodness for our next meeting. Until that time stay connected to God and keep trusting the process. God has a lot in store for you.
